TECHNICAL DATA ABOUT MEZZANINE FLOORS
Decking: Internal mezzanine floors mostly use 38 mm thick P6 high-density chipboard for durability. For areas prone to spills, P5 moisture-resistant chipboard decking is recommended. External platforms feature galvanised steel chequer plates or open mesh flooring to withstand weather conditions and prevent rusting. (Refer to F.A.Q.)
Main Beams: Primary support for mezzanine floors comes from universal beams, similar to RSJs or I-beams.
Secondary Joists: Galvanised steel C-sections with cleats at each end are connected to the main beams, and the decking is secured to these joists to complete the mezzanine floor structure.
Columns: Support columns use square hollow section steel (SHS), ranging from 70 mm² to 200 mm². Each column has a base plate welded to the bottom and a rectangular plate welded to the top to connect with the main beams.
Staircases: Access is provided via all-steel staircases, constructed with 100x50x5 mm rectangular hollow section stringers and 50x50x2.5 mm square hollow section posts. 50x50x2.5 mm rectangular hollow section hand and knee rails are commonly used. Treads, typically 800–1200 mm wide depending on the floor’s intended use.
Hand and Knee Rail: Edge protection varies with use. Standard rails for storage platforms or office areas consist of 50x50x2.5 mm square hollow section posts (1130 mm high), with 33.7 mm galvanised circular hollow section handrails (1100 mm high) and 33.7 mm galvanised circular hollow section knee rails (550 mm high). Mezzanine floors designed for public use or for children cannot have a gap larger than 100 mm. Such gaps can be affordably bridged with the use of MDF/Chipboard panels, steel bars, or tempered glass panels.

ESSENTIAL SAFETY AND FUNCTIONAL ADD-ONS FOR MEZZANINE FLOORS
Kickboards, typically made of 2 mm galvanised steel angle, are a practical health and safety addition, preventing small objects from falling off mezzanine edges. Sliding-style load gates, crafted from 22 mm steel circular hollow sections, offer efficient access for goods with minimal space usage, creating a 1.5 m –2.0 m opening. For enhanced safety, the up-and-over style safety load gate ensures a secure barrier even when open, accommodating loads up to 1500 mm cubed. Additionally, wear plates protect the chipboard surface in high-traffic load gate areas, using durable 1500x1500x3 mm steel chequer plates with edges designed to safeguard the flooring.
FIRE SAFETY COMPLIANCE
In certain cases, mezzanine floors may require a 1-hour fire rating, depending on their size, location, and intended use. This is achieved by installing a 1200x600 mm² lay-in grid suspended ceiling with a 1-hour fire rating beneath the mezzanine. Additional safety measures include white PVC-finished 1-hour fire-rated column casings and fascia to protect exposed edges.
